Background

What are you in school for?

We’re in a 4-year Bachelors Degree program in Mechanical Systems Engineering at Conestoga College – It’s basically a mix of mechanical & electrical engineering and a dash of business. The following video is of an Automated Manufacturing cell we made in our 2nd year of the program.

Why are you going to Europe?

Last year, Heinz and I heard about the Transatlantic-Exchange-Program offered at our school, and found out that Germany was the next years exchange. We made the goal to go, and look at where we are today!

Trans-atlantic-what?

Read all about it here: http://www.conestogac.on.ca/met/iamt/TEP/index.html

Essentially, it’s a 3 year pilot program for an university exchange program between 4 countries and 7 schools. The schools participating include:

The application process required professor references, personal references, a 2500 word essay and finally a personal interview.

So you got accepted?
Yup!

Now what?
After being accepted we started collecting all of our required documents for a visa to go to Germany. After months of preperation, we finally went to the German Consulate – where we were told we don’t need a visa. As Canadians it turns out we’re eligible to stay in the country for up to 4 months; after which all we need to do is apply for a residence permit with our letter of acceptance from a German University. Hooray.

So when do you leave?
Our flight leaves on September 1st, 2010 and we will be in Germany until May 2011. In Germany there are only two academic semesters per year – Winter and Summer. Our term begins on Oktober 27th, 2010, and goes until February 12th, 2011. After that we will hopefully be working awesome co-op jobs in Germany!
